Chao Zhou's Award-Winning Homestay Design Marries Tradition with Innovation

The Peach Garden Hostel, located in the scenic Shihuyu Village, Beijing, is a testament to Zhou's innovative design approach. The original timber structure of the old house has been preserved, with part of the external walls renewed. The design team employed a light construction strategy, which is both sustainable and cost-effective, resulting in a high-quality finish.

One of the unique features of this project is the use of large glass areas to allow nature to permeate the rooms. Guests can enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons and the majestic view of the Great Wall through these expansive windows. This design choice reflects Zhou's belief in the deep connection between architecture and nature.

The project faced some challenges, primarily due to the limited depth of the original building. To overcome this, the design team extended a multi-function hall in the southeast corner, close to the original annex. The key design challenge was to minimize the impact of the new construction on the historical building, a task they accomplished through their light construction strategy.
